Australian Golf Open 2022: Adrian Meronk, Ashleigh Buhai win

Poland’s Adrian Meronk put on a clinical display in the final round of the men’s 2022 ISPS HANDA Australian Open to reign supreme over Australian Adam Scott by five strokes.

Scott, the 2013 Masters winner and local hero, entered Sunday at Melbourne’s Victoria Golf Club with a one-shot lead over the Pole but a 2-over performance – starting with an opening bogey, then a double on the 17th – saw his chances of raising the Stonehaven Cup quickly evaporate.

Meronk, on the other hand, was dialed in from the first tee – birdying his first two holes, then capping off the incredible victory with an eagle on the Par 5 18th.

Overall, it was an impressive week from Poland’s most accomplished player, which yielded scores of 73, 66, 63 and 66.

The women’s tournament, played at the course as the men, was won by South African Ashleigh Buhai, who held out South Korea’s Jiyai Shin by a single stroke.

Shin, 34, entered the final round as the leader but four bogeys in her opening seven holes almost put her out of contention.

She had a putt on the 18th hole to force a play-off, but missed to the right, giving Buhai victory.

Players split their rounds between both courses across the opening two days, with the weekend played at Victoria Golf Club.

The Alister MacKenzie designed Par 71 Victoria Golf Club is renowned as being one of the best in the country and is one of the crown jewels of Melbourne’s iconic sandbelt.

Across the four days of tournament play, the course was in pristine condition with immaculate fairways and lightning-fast greens.

While the fairways were of generous width, the main defences of Victoria Golf Club are the bunkering coupled with the raised greens (all of which, seemingly, had sharp runoffs at every edge).

During the Open, the biggest challenge for players was hitting their exact yardages off the tee – anything slightly long or short would be swallowed up by the bunkers, or awaiting swales.
